Peugeot's big 407 Coupé has gained a full five star rating in recent Euro NCAP crash testing.

The coupe scored the maximum star rating and in the process, says Peugeot, set a category record, with a full 16 out of 16 points scored for the adult frontal impact score.

The big three French manufacturers (Peugeot, Citroen and Renault) have championed vehicle safety of late and have featured a strong safety focus in their respective marketing campaigns.

Peugeot says the 407 Coupé's performance results stem from the "excellent behaviour of the 407 structure, with dual track absorption of forces which have been adapted to the Coupé body shell for frontal impacts, and to the lateral reinforcements of the door and its surrounds."

The 407's complement of seven airbags also plays its role the company says.

The Coupé was also awarded four stars for child protection and two stars for pedestrian protection.
