After only three years Porsche has ended production of its Carrera GT

The company said in 2003 it initially planned only 1000 Carrera GTs would be produced at its plant in Leipzig, Germany but by the last day of production in early May this year, more than 1200 were built. In left-hand drive only, most of the  Carrera GTs went to buyers in the US.

The Carrera GT evolved from a 5.5-litre V10 engine program originally developed for endurance competition. The naturally aspirated 5.7-litre V10 produces 450kW at 8000rpm and 590Nm. The Carrera GT makes 100km/h in 3.9 seconds and 200km/h in under 10 seconds, on its way to a top speed in excess of 300km/h.

Porsche claims the Carrera GT as the world's most successful supercar, its 1270-unit production run outnumbering "the total production of the McLaren F1, Ferrari Enzo and Pagani Zonda models combined". Nonetheless, there's no word yet as to a follow-up limited edition Porsche supercar.
