FIAT PUNTO

Fiat claims its latest addition to the Punto range -- an auto -- is more frugal again

Not content with claiming bragging rights for the most economical conventional car on the Aussie market, Fiat is set to release an even more frugal variant -- and it's an auto.

According to Fiat cars Australia, its Punto 1.3 JTD Multijet turbodiesel five-door registers a combined ADR 81.01 fuel economy figure of 4.6lt/100km -- around 60mpg in the 'old money'. Set for release this month, the new self-shifting Punto 1.3 JTD DuaLogic outpoints its manual stablemate by 0.1lt/100km.

The DuaLogic gearbox, which will also be available on the Fiat Punto 1.4 petrol, is technically a sequential manual gearbox with automatic actuation. It features a conventional clutch and gearbox and in auto mode gearshifting is computer-controlled.

In automatic and Economy mode, the DuaLogic Punto consumes less fuel than a manual variant, claims Fiat. The petrol 1.4 registers 5.7 compared with 5.9lt/100 km in combined testing, however, the most substantial benefits are achieved around town. In city mode, the petrol registers 6.8 compared to 7.5lt/100km for the manual and 5.8 compared to 5.9lt/100 in the case of the turbodiesels, the company says.

The Fiat Punto 1.4 DuaLogic goes on sale this month from $21,490 with 1.3 JTD DuaLogic priced at $23,490 -- each a $1500 premium over the manual variants.
