Barely had the ink dried on a joint venture agreement between the newly independent Chrysler Group and Getrag to produce advanced transmissions at a new site in Indiana, before Fiat Powertrain Technologies announced they would supply the Ducato's 3.0-litre turbo-Diesel engine for the DaimlerChrysler Truck Group's Mitsubishi Canter range.
DaimlerChrysler's Truck Group retains Freightliner, Mercedes-Benz Trucks, Sterling and Mitsubishi Trucks, following the divestment of the Chrysler Group.
The Chrysler Group needs no introduction and basically comprises Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep. With help from German drivetrain specialist Getrag, Chrysler's new plant costs $530 million and will produce the more efficient dual-clutch transmissions which are scheduled to go into production during 2009.
These transmissions ('DCTs') work along the same principles as Volkswagen's DSG type and offer fuel economy gains over traditional epicyclic automatic transmissions.
