One of the uncertain joys of watching the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix at Albert Park is the Celebrity Challenge, the support race that pits soapy starlet ingenues against ACL-damaged footballers and one-hit wonder rockers from two decades earlier.

For 2008, Fiat is rounding up a fleet of the new 500 retro small car (more here) for the event, ahead of the car's general release to the Australian public.

The 500 has already been a run-away success in Europe and Fiat importer, Ateco Automotive, is enjoying similar response from the public here, with the first three months' supply pre-sold.

By proffering the car for the Celebrity Challenge, Ateco will certainly introduce the car to Australia with a bang -- or perhaps several, based on the damage bill from the Celebrity Challenge in previous years.

Among the celebrities already known to be taking part in the event next year are former AFL footballers Luke Darcy of the Western Bulldogs and Nathan Buckley from Collingwood, plus retired Rugby Union Wallaby Ben Tune.

The event will precede the Grand Prix on March 16, 2008.
