HYUNDAI GETZ

Trailing all year, Hyundai's light car has narrowly edged out Toyota's equivalent and has more ambitious plans for next month

The big news from the latest VFACTS information is the stoush in the light car segment. Toyota has been ahead of the other light car entrants all year, but in November, the Hyundai Getz just barely scraped home ahead of the Toyota.

In Year-to-Date terms, the Yaris has it in the bag, but Getz -- without a sedan variant remember -- sold 2473 units against 2405 for the Yaris during November.

Sales for the Yaris have been consistently better than 2000 units a month for the entire year, but the Getz pulled a stunner for November -- possibly the result of a large fleet order.

"There has been a higher acceptance of Hyundai with the brand generally. There has been a strong driveaway program with Getz... reinforcing the affordability of Hyundai products," said Tiffany Junee, Manager Corporate Communications and Media for Hyundai.

"We're aiming for 4700 sales [in total] this month -- December."

Given total sales of Hyundai's passenger cars in November were 4239, that's an ambitious figure, but with further supply of the new i30 coming on stream, it's a fair prospect.
