PROTON SATRIA

Proton has announced a $18,990 drive-away pricetag for its new generation Satria

Proton has announced drive-away pricing for its latest Satria Neo -- the latest version of its popular small car. Set to be announced at the Brisbane Motor Show early next month, the Satria Neo will go on sale at $18,990 'drive away'.

The second-generation of the Satria nameplate debuted in its Malaysian home market in July 2006. It was displayed at the Sydney Motor Show in late 2006 and in preparation for its local launch the brand has sought to boost its dealer numbers Down Under, announcing new outlets in Victoria and its first dealership in Tasmania.

The Satria Neo is powered by Proton's 1.6-litre DOHC Campro four. Peak power is 82kW. Proton claims the powerplant delivers "smoother power and torque delivery while preserving its frugal qualities" thanks to an updated engine management system.

"Satria Neo will be entering the small three-door hatch sector of the market which is a niche that is under-contested in the Australian market," said Proton Cars Australia managing director, John Startari.

"We have formulated pricing to be in line with Proton's policy of providing value for money, fully equipped cars," Startari said.

According to Startari, the Satria Neo will be sold "fully equipped". Standard specification will include reverse sensors, ABS brakes with EBD, twin airbags, aircon, power windows and mirrors and central locking.

Two trim levels will be offered, the GX and range-topping GXR. The GXR will feature 16-inch alloy wheels and 195-section Continental SportContact-2 tyres. Proton says the European rubber will ensure the new car can "fully exploit its Lotus engineered suspension."

No pricing information has been announced for the GXR.
