Late last year we showed you images of BMW's next generation Z4 convertible, complete with a folding steel roof to replace the current fabric top.
Now, a new wave of Carparazzi photos shows the next Z4 revealing more of its final shape -- disguised though it may be by heavy-duty paisley paint that attempts with partial success to confuse the eye.
The big difference this time is that the photos confirm not just the forthcoming CC folding metal top in all its actuality, but also that the Z4 will be clad in all-new panelling that tones down and smooths out some of the more controversial elements of the original.
The new model will be readily identifiable as a Z4, but the stylistic restraint may mean the BMW sportster will appeal to a wider range of customers.
The photos show a more elongated profile (Carparazzi reckons the new Z4 will be about 25mm longer) that appears to drop the trademark upswept crease in the front quarter panel, along with more horizontal lower sill lines. The Z4 also gets repeater lamps -- featuring massive lenses -- built into the side mirrors.
At the back, the perky, narrow spoiler bulge on the boot is replaced by a smoother, wider and more conservative design that complements a horizontal upper bumper line below new 3 Series-style taillights.
And, as you might have expected, the kidney grille grows in dominance, complementing a more aggressive, heavily creased bonnet and more "cheerful" less downswept headlight shapes that are sure to incorporate the LED indicators adopted elsewhere across the BMW range.
Carparazzi is suggesting too that the next Z4 may offer diesel power, as well as the M3's 4.0-litre V8 in a future M version.
The range will almost certainly continue the increasing range of BMW engines utilising the company's EfficientDynamics technology -- many of which don't come to Australia because of fuel quality issues -- including the twin turbo 3.0-litre six used in 335i models.
There are also suggestions that Z4 production will be moved from BMW's plant in South Carolina to Regensburg in Germany.
The next Z4 is expected to go on sale in late 2009, suggesting an Australian introduction date early in 2010.
