Staff members from TMI Pacific, the local distributor of the Mahindra Pik-Up have just returned from India, the marque's home turf.
They witnessed in the subcontinent, an event in its 12th year, the Mahindra Great Escape. This event pits 150 enthusiasts, ferrying 40 Mahindra vehicles through the Great Thar Desert -- no truth to the rumour that, in parallel with our own Outback, the Indians have their 'Out Thar'.
The success of the event in India has inspired the locals here to attempt a similar run.
"The Mahindra Great Escape was an absolutely exhilarating experience! The experience of driving and actually working with the vehicle was simply thrilling!" said Claire Tynan, COO of TMI Pacific.
"We're delighted to be planning an adventure based on this incredible concept for our Australian market. We look forward to sharing the details of our own Australian plans as they're cemented," she said.
Ms Tynan took part in the Great Escape, driving a Mahindra Scorpio, one of six models of Mahindra taking part, and built on the same platform as the Pik-Up.
Participants drove the vehicles over the non-competitive route, which comprises varying terrain, including sand dunes, rocky patches, steep inclines and sheer drops.
Unlike Audi's cross-continent promotions in the Q7, Mahindra's Great Escape for Australians would be catering to customers rather than the media specifically.
