The majority of Australian C4 Picasso buyers opt for the 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine coupled to the six-speed automatic transmission, according to Citroen.

Since it's such a popular combination, Citroen has chosen to give it a whirl in the C4 hatch also. The new car, named C4 HDi 2.0, will join the rest of the C4 range at the Brisbane Motor Show.

Citroen has arranged with the factory for the new diesel variant to be equipped to the same level of trim as the 2.0-litre petrol-engined car, acknowledging a shift in thinking among the general public, from equating diesels and economy to equating diesels with driveability and prestige.

The 2.0-litre model develops 320Nm of torque -- with an overboost facility raising peak torque a further 20Nm -- to propel the C4 to 100km/h from a standing start in 10.4 seconds. Open road fuel consumption (not combined cycle consumption, we stress) is claimed to be as low as 5.1L/100km.

This latest C4 variant is the opening shot from Citroen in the automotive sales war for 2008. The company, having enjoyed record sales during 2007, plans to introduce the new C5 (more here), the Berlingo (more here) and two other vans not previously sold in Australia -- the Nemo (more here) and the larger-than-Berlingo Dispatch.

The company will reveal full specs and pricing for the C4 HDi 2.0 when the Brisbane show opens next month.
