Updated Transporter and Caravelle models revealed ahead of Frankfurt debut

Volkswagen's T5 commercial vehicle range has been facelifted and upgraded, ahead of a global launch in Frankfurt next month. Looking more like the company's Golf and Polo, thanks to a revised frontal treatment, the Transporter and its passenger-carrying Caravelle offshoot will also boast new common-rail diesel engines.

The new engines are said to reduce emissions and lower fuel consumption by an average figure of 10 per cent. According to the press release for the enhanced T5 models, the new engines (2.0-litre turbodiesels), are quieter also and comply with Euro V emissions standards.

In addition to the cosmetic changes outside, the T5 Transporter now comes with a three-spoke steering wheel, restyled instruments, touch-screen satnav and an upgraded audio system. The Caravelle is similarly equipped, with the further addition of a USB input for external music sources.

Driving aids and safety features to be introduced with the revised Caravelle include: a new generation stability control system, hill-start assist, emergency brake light facility, Side Assist lane change warning and tyre pressure monitoring.

Plans are in place to offer the revised range with a seven-speed DSG transmission, which will also be available in combination with a Haldex-based 4Motion all-wheel drive system, due later in 2010.

Volkswagen intends for the revised model range to go on sale in Europe from January 2010. A 'California' campervan conversion will also be marketed as part of the range.
