The brand that started the affordable hardtop convertible trend is back with its latest offering, with Peugeot launching the 308 CC this week. And for the first time in the company's Australian history, it has a diesel engine fitted to a convertible.

The new 308 CC range will consist of two specification grades and two engine options. Customers will be able to pick either a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine or a 2.0 HDi FAP turbodiesel. The petrol engine is mated to either a six-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission, while the diesel is only available with a six-speed automatic.

Both engines are available for the CC or CC S models. The base CC is equipped with six airbags (including side head airbags, which Peugeot is claiming as a world first), electronic stability program, self-deploying rollover bars, rear parking assist, MP3 connectivity, LED taillights, sports seats with cloth trim and 17-inch alloys.

Upgrading to the CC S adds electric leather seats with heating and memory functions, directional xenon headlights and front parking assist. It also offers Peugeot's Airwave heating system, windstop and 18-inch alloys.

Given the company's 75-year history with the Coupe Cabriolet concept it comes as no surprise this latest CC features an updated system that can open or close in 20 seconds.

The range starts at $48,990 (price guide not including statutory and government charges) for the CC petrol-manual and tops out at $59,990 for the CC S diesel.
