The atmosphere was... electric... at last weekend's Goodwood Festival of Speed in England when Renault zapped onlookers with a dynamic display of its Z.E. zero emission concept car.
The A$4 million one-off Renault was transported across the channel to join the aircraft-inspired Ondelios concept car along with an electric-engined Dauphine from 1959, both of which normally reside at the Renault museum in Paris.
The thing that impressed onlookers was the French maker's willingness to put its expensive hand-built creation onto the track, where it circulated alongside classics including a Jaguar XJ13 and an Aston Martin DBR1. The electric Renault also made an appearance on the hillclimb track.
The all-electric Z.E. concept is based on the Renault Kangoo Be Bop first seen at last year's Paris motor show (more here).
It uses numerous technologies to extend the range of its lithium-ion battery powered 70kW/226Nm electric motor while keeping occupants comfortable. These include insulation provided by dual-layer body panels, along with solar panels to assist temperature retention inside the cabin.
Sharing the glory with icons of the past was no problem within the confines of the Goodwood Festival: had the Z.E's batteries given up, at least the driver would not have had far to walk.
