MERCEDES-BENZ ACTROS

words - Jeremy Bass
Daimler will showcase world's most fuel efficient 40-tonner at Melbourne truck show

Mercedes-Benz will be displaying its Guinness record-setting Actros Safety Truck at the Melbourne International Truck, Trailer and Equipment Show in March.

The Actros earned its spot in the Guinness Book of Records as the world's most fuel-efficient 40-tonne truck with the achievement of 19.44L/100km. While that might elicit the odd quizzical look from among the ECOnetic/Mini D community, it works out at less than 0.8 litres per 100 kilometres per tonne. That's green for a truck -- indeed it averages out a fair bit greener than a 1.3 tonne car sipping three or four litres per hundred.

The Daimler stand in Melbourne will feature a 6x2 Actros 2541 kitted out with the record setter's full panoply of fuel-efficiency, safety and emission control technologies. Alongside standard features such as automated xenon lamps and rain-sensitive wipers, it is fitted with:

  • lift axle;
  • Michelin low-friction tyres;
  • aerodynamic A-pillars and sun visor;
  • lightweight aluminium turntable;
  • ESP, ABS, electronic pneumatic braking;
  • safety package consisting of lane assist, proximity control and active brake assist;
  • side extenders and skirts;
  • fuel economy meter (VDO);
  • fleetboard;
  • powershift transmission with automated 2-pedal function, roll back and EcoRoll

Daimler will use the display truck to draw attention to its all-new EEV emissions management software it packs into its 410 and 440 hp engines. The company claims particle emissions 30 below Euro 5 requirements, which come into effect in Australia in 2011.
