Soldiers and airmen of the ADF are currently evaluating the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen, the replacement for the venerable 'Project Perentie' Land Rovers.
Eleven vehicles delivered to the Australian Defence Forces have undergone conversion work by a local (Newcastle) firm, GH Varley, and are said to be "performing well" in demanding early tests -- a promising sign considering the punishment the vehicles will receive in the field on future missions.
The local test program is part of a global assessment that includes evaluation in Austria and Germany. Vehicles are tested for a range of operational measures, including noise and emissions output, brakes and steering performance, high speed handling plus testing of the optional armour kit.
In total, Mercedes-Benz will deliver a total of 1200 G-Wagens to the ADF by the end of 2013 -- including 6x6 and 4x4 configurations. So far, all deliveries are on schedule.
Mercedes-Benz has a contract that will see it continue to support the Defence service for the next 15 years.
