Hyundai has been preparing for this week's New York motor show unveiling with teaser images of its hybrid Sonata/i45, set to go on sale in the US later this year.

The company has told media that the Sonata Hybrid Blue -- they haven't yet settled publicly on a name -- will carry plenty of exterior design elements, starting at the front end, for at-a-glance differentiation from its petrol and diesel powered siblings.

"It's a hybrid in a tuxedo," US CEO John Krafcik told media. The 'tuxedo' refers to the company's new 'fluidic sculpture' design language that first appeared in the recently released ix35 compact SUV.

The Sonata, likely to carry the i45 moniker out here, will come with three different powertrain options, including an overhauled 2.4-litre Theta II four with direct injection and continuous variable valve timing, matched to new six-speed auto.

A disguised car spotted in Victoria in late January was confirmed by Hyundai's local spokespeople as a prototype of the new hybrid; here for hot weather testing.

On sale in Korea with conventional powertrains since last September, the new Sonata has already sold than 100,000 there.
