Peugeot has released the latest comer to its 308 range, the new off-road orientated '3008'. Larger than the 308 hatch but smaller than the 308 Touring, the high-riding 3008 combines SUV practicality without the burden -- and added costs -- associated with purchasing and running an all-wheel drive.

Spacious, versatile and economical, the 3008 is offered with a choice of three powertrains, each combining Euro 5 compliant environmental credentials with smooth performance and impressive fuel economy.

Manufactured in Sochaux, France, the new 3008 starts at $35,990 before dealer and delivery charges are added. It is available in two model grades (XSE and XTE), and positions itself at the crossroad between several existing vehicle categories (the SUV, the MPV (people mover) and hatchback), while at the same time enjoying a raised architecture-type body style.

"The strengths of the 3008 are derived from a blend of motoring concepts whilst at the same time adopting a number of new and original technologies such as Dynamic Roll Control and Grip Control, enabling it to combine specifications often deemed incompatible with an SUV," says General Manager and Director of Peugeot Australia, Ken Thomas.

Available with a choice of three engines, the Peugeot 3008 is offered with one petrol and two diesel units delivering 115kW, 80kW and 120kW respectively. Fuel economy and CO2 emissions are impressively low, with figures starting at 5.1L/100km and 135g/km.

Another innovation for the 3008 is Peugeot's new Bosch-derived 'Grip Control' system. Consisting of an advanced traction control system coupled with special Mud & Snow tyres, the system optimises the traction of both front wheels for enhanced off-road driving. The driver controlled system offers five settings: Standard, Snow, Off-road, Sand and Off.

A full report on the new Peugeot 3008 from the local launch at Dinner Plain, Victoria will be published soon.
