Car-makers Audi, Kia and Peugeot scored trophies at the 2011 Australian International Design Awards announced on Saturday, July 23.
Entered in the Automotive and Transport category, the winning Design Award contender was Audi's A7 Sportback, which crossed the line ahead of Kia's swish Optima sedan and Peugeot's 3008 SUV.
Introduced to Australia earlier this year, the Audi is described by the company as aesthetic elegance on a grand scale and fits the currently popular four-door luxury "coupe" mould where it competes with the likes of BMW 5 Series GT and Mercedes-Benz CLS.
Noted for its appealing style, ultra high technology, comfort and on-road dynamics, the A7 Sportback successfully marries all these at times contradicting themes.
Audi Australia Managing Director Uwe Hagen said "Good design and aesthetic excellence is a core pillar of Audi's brand ethos. We are delighted that the A7 Sportback has won its category in Australia's most prestigious design awards."
The Kia Optima has already received worldwide accolades for its outstanding style and shows the Korean company has truly come of age as an international brand.
According to the Design Award judges: "Its sculptured form and contrasting elements are fascinating. Premium cues and very successful styling make this a lot of car for the money."
Peugeot's 3008 is the company's first venture into SUVs and brings French character into the segment with the choice of three engines, two transmissions and a front-drive only configuration. The judges commented that "Through its non-conformist approach and its resolute styling, the 3008 offers an original solution and optimal versatility to customers. Protective, versatile and innovative, the Peugeot 3008 opens up new motoring horizons ".
The fourth trophy winner in the Automotive and Transport category was Safe-n-Sound's Platinum AHR Air Cushion Convertible Child Restraint for cars. This advanced child car seat incorporates an air cushion regulating airflow for increased protection in side impacts, a tilting, adjustable headrest and a "hassle free" harness.
The four Design Award trophy winners were selected from a fin al list of 11 finalists that received a special mention. The list included Peugeot's RCZ coupe, Hyundai's Elantra sedan and Ford's Ranger light commercial.
Overall winner at the Australian International Design Awards was a Danish designed interactive children's playground that combines "The appeal of computing with climbing and play equipment."
Past winners include Qantas with its A380 economy seat, in 2009, Hyundai's i45 sedan in 2010 and Howard Wright's M8 intensive care hospital bed in 2010.
