Land Rover has announced changes to its Range Rover Sport and Discovery -- but they are not coming here. At least in the short term.
Following its introduction to the Vogue, Land Rover is making the ZF-sourced eight-speed transmission available in its UK and international release MY2012 update for the Range Rover Sport and Discovery 4 models. The new transmission improves efficiency for both the serious off-roader and the luxury SUV but Australian customers won't be offered the updated auto.
In combination with the Disco's 3.0-litre diesel the eight-speeder reduces consumption requirements from 9.1L/100km to 8.8L. In the case of the diesel-equipped Sport model, consumption ratings go from 9.2L/100km to 8.8L. The top-flight 5.0-litre V8 petrol engine-equipped Range Rover Sport will continue to use the six-speed.
The increased efficiency is matched to better performance. Both the Disco and the Sport 2012 models boast improved figures: 188kW compared to 180 in the outgoing models. Torque output remains at 600Nm from 2000 revs. The benefits in efficiency have come by way of the eight-speeder's wider spread of ratios and taller gearing compared to the previous six-speed option.
Australian MY12 Sport and Discovery will, however, get some interior and exterior upgrades including new wheel options. Sport Luxury spec models and above also boast a powered tailgate, while the Discovery model can now be ordered with a Technology Pack (including off-road sat-nav system) and/or the Vision Assist Pack which has the brand's well-working side-view system (follow link below to our launch review).
Interior equipment, for example, a 7-inch dual-view multimedia screen and rear-seat accommodation in the Range Rovers, came in for a major improvement with the MY10 release of the flagship Vogue. The chauffeur-oriented role that some Range Rovers serve encouraged the brand to up the luxury stakes with features such as reclining rear seats.
According to Land Rover, local deliveries of the updated Sport and Discovery will commence from November this year. Pricing will be announced closer to the launch.
