Before the new Hyundai i30 arrives in 2012, which was launched in Frankfurt, the current model will given an upgrade in the form of a fettled 1.6-litre diesel engine.

Now four years old, the small car that gave the Korean giant a leg-up out of the cheap-and-cheerful territory it dominated for more than a decade gets a few more Newtons plus a sixth gear in its standard manual transmission. The current four-speed auto option remains unchanged.

Under the upgrade, peak torque rises to 260Nm between 1900-2750 rpm – up five from 255Nm across the same rev band.

Combined-cycle fuel economy sees an 0.2-litre improvement, down to 4.5L/100km from 4.7 with the new manual transmission and 5.7L/100km for the auto – an even better 0.3-litre improvement.

Combined-cycle CO2 emissions drop to 119g/km for the i30 hatch (124 for the wagon), down from 125 and 128g/km respectively for each with the previous five-speed manual. Autos benefit, too – down to 150 and 154 g/km respectively from the superseded mill’s 159 and 159 g/km.
