If you've been losing sleep over the fact that Maserati's MC-Shift gearbox version of the GranTurismo S coupe looks pretty much a dead-ringer for the regular model, take heart.
With the 2011 model year, the maker of high-priced Italian sports cars has taken steps to distinguish the harder-edged, "racing derived" MC-Shift model from the regular GranTurismo S coupe.
It starts from the outside, where carbon fibre spoilers make an assertive statement supported by black door sills and exhaust tips, while equally black 20-inch wheels reveal bright red six-pot Brembo brake callipers grasping cross-drilled cast iron/aluminium rotors.
Inside, the MC-Shift GranTurismo S gains carbon fibre on the dash, door panels, centre console and instruments, as well as the longer gearshift paddles. A combination of "Poltrono Frau" leather and Alcantara sets off the interior, with the "figure hugging": front and rear seats distinguished by their "dynamic design with horizontal piping on the seats and seatbacks."
All this is part of the MC Sportline equipment package derived from the Maserati Coarse motorsport programme and sets the stage for a tighter, more responsive Maserati.
The MC-Shift GranTurismo S also gets a revised suspension with uprated shock absorbers, stiffer springs and revised front and rear anti-roll bars, all aimed at sharpening up steering response. The front-engined MC-Shift GranTurismo S quotes a close to ideal 47%-53% front-rear weight distribution.
Maserati says the MC-Shift GranTurismo with its 323kW/490Nm 4.7-litre V8 engine and electro-actuated six-speed gearbox will reach 100km/h from a standstill in 4.9 seconds. The MC-Shift Maser is as audibly rewarding as ever with a driver-actuated exhaust valve that allows the choice of a "deep and throaty" or more discreet engine note.
Quoted recommended retail price in Australia, pre statutory and delivery charges, is $345,000.
