Chevrolet says the kids are the future when it comes to plans for new product

Chevrolet revealed two concept cars at Detroit designed to appease the next generation of drivers, one of which could be a sneak peek at the next generation Cruze coupe. The American automaker is embarking on a youth-driven policy for future product planning, after results from what Chevrolet considers a significant study on feedback from potential customers.

"Chevrolet has always stood for making the 'aspirational' attainable for all generations," said GM North America chief Mark Reuss, during the unveiling.

Enter the 'Tru 140S' and 'Code 130R' concept cars.

Both feature stop-start technology and if produced would be priced in the $20,000 bracket, according to Chevrolet. The 'affordable' pricing would serve the anticipated 40 per cent of auto buyers aged under 30, "and a combined $1 trillion in purchasing power," says the GM car company.

The Tru 140S (white/silver exterior) uses the Cruze model's front-wheel drive arrangement and both vehicles are powered by a frugal 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine outputting 110kW/200Nm.

The Code 130R concept (red exterior) uses rear-wheel drive and its styling is stockier, giving it a mini muscle car appearance. Comments of a 'compact Camaro' were heard in Detroit.

Both models incorporate high levels of smart phone integration to appeal to younger, techo-savvy drivers.

"These two concepts interpret that vision for a new generation. We're seeking out our newest customers' opinions, listening to their advice, and engaging them in new ways."

Chev's stand at this year's Detroit motor show included an internet 'kiosk' for visitors to offer immediate feedback - information from what the brand calls "crowdsourcing".

The actual presentation was laden with slices of video interviews with young would-be buyers commenting in response to the company's questioning on what a car should be. "Entertaining, attractive... And smarter," they said. Uninterrupted access to the internet while on the move was also a must-have, according to the study group findings.

The Tru concept, at least, looks do-able as production reality. Based on the Cruze helps its cause and Chevrolet has admitted it needs to inject more style in its lineup... Cruze Coupe, anyone?
