CHEVROLET VOLT

Holden won't confirm prices for the Volt, saying it is "nowhere near" arriving at a definitive figure

Right from the beginning, it has been expected that Holden's new hybrid Volt won't be cheap.

It is anticipated the Cruze-size petrol-electric plug-in hybrid will be priced well beyond other cars that might be seen as competitors, particularly the Toyota Prius.

With a figure of $60,000 on the lips of most people, the long-awaited Volt could not ever expect to become a volume seller.

However Holden is playing its cards close to the chest when it comes to price speculation. It merely says it is "nowhere near" talking about pricing of the Volt, which remains on track for its local launch later in the year.

Similarly, it will not comment on speculation that the Volt will be available on order only, and that sales will be quite limited.

However Holden spokesman Sean Poppitt said the Volt, although admittedly a niche model, will be a major focus for the company. "We are not talking about big volumes, but will be doing a lot of things with it. We wouldn't be planning that if the Volt was just on order." he said.
