Introduction
The 147 GTA is the small Alfa hatch fitted with the 3.2-litre V6 taken from the 156 GTA. The engine is a modification of the same V6 fitted to the 166 and develops 300Nm of torque. The output is fed through a six-speed manual transmission to the front wheels. Performance from the 147 GTA amounts to a top speed of 246km/h and acceleration from a standing start to 100km/h in just 6.3 seconds. The manufacturer claims that the 147 GTA is nonetheless, a practical car for everyday use. Lowered suspension and 17? alloy wheels are obvious clues to the car?s potential. Front suspension is a double-wishbone system and the rear end is supported by a variation on the Chapman strut theme. Active safety is enhanced by the adoption of new electronic control systems such as EBD (electronic brake force distribution), VDC and TCS. The first varies braking effort according to the load the vehicle is carrying, the second regulates handling traits via the ABS and the third is the traction control system for optimal grip during acceleration, at speeds up to 40km/h. |
Exterior
The Alfa 147 GTA can be identified by radically flared wheel arches and an aggressive body kit. Relative to the standard 147, the GTA features black headlight backing and fog lights shifted outboard. The bumper is larger at the rear and incorporates an airdam with a large extractor flanked by two smaller extraction vents. These elements improve airflow under the car and aid aerodynamic efficiency, reducing lift. Two oval tips are fitted to the exhaust system under the rear of the car. 17? alloy wheels are fitted with 225/45 tyres. The wheels comprise five distinctive circular slots, creating an array of interlinked rings. |
Interior
The trim material on doors and dash is named Puma grey and is a darker shade of trim than other Alfa 147 variants. The foot pedals feature aluminium finish. Seat fabric is cloth with leather an option. The cloth trim is available in three colours; red, silver or blue. The leather is only available in black or in a two-tone combination of black with a natural leather colour or blue or grey. The instrument panel features additional gauges with revised graphics. ? |
Mechanical
The 3.2-litre DOHC V6 is sourced from the 156 GTA and is, in turn, a stroked version of the 3.0-litre engine fitted to the 166. The manufacturer claims a top speed for the 147 GTA of 246 km/h and a 0-100km/h time of 6.3 seconds. Torque is available at lower engine speeds and despite its nature, the engine will pull easily from 2,000 RPM, according to Alfa Romeo. Additional technical changes for the 147 GTA include new ECU software, an engine oil cooler, revised intake and exhaust ports. The transmission has been upgraded for heavier duty and the driveshafts are new. The clutch is a larger diameter to cope with the extra torque. The double wishbone front suspension departs from the standard 147 set-up in featuring reinforced and revised locating members and a lower ride height. Spring and damper settings have also been revised and the anti-roll bar is a larger diameter. At the rear, suspension remains a Chapman strut system, but the mounting points have been revised. As for the front suspension, a larger diameter anti-roll bar is fitted and spring and damper settings have been revised. Changes to the suspension geometry at the rear ensure that the outside wheel in a corner adopts a negative camber stance in relation to the road surface. ? |
