FORD COURIER

words - Joe Kenwright
The Courier is an oddball development of the Mazda B-series and ends up better than its ageing starting point and three-nation origins would suggest

Ford Courier XLT 4x2 Crew Cab 4.0
Priced from $33,490 including a/c

An older Japanese Mazda design, most bits are made in Thailand then sent to South Africa where it meets up with Ford's old Cologne V6 (once fitted to the German Capris) since re-engineered for the Ford Explorer. In the process, the South Africans did a seriously good job of rectifying the poor standard suspension balance on the Thai-built Ford and Mazda versions that continue in diesel and four-cylinder form.

With its retro-Ford F-Series styling, it almost celebrates its seniority and in chrome-grille XLT trim cuts some presence but only if you order the two-tone paint.

The dash style and layout is closer to a 1988 EA Falcon than any current model but the contoured seats and cabin space are right at the top of the class. Despite its age, the Courier is significantly bigger than most of its rivals. The combination of a tall cabin and high rideheight leaves it towering over rivals. Tall passengers are able to step into the front and rear without having to double up as they would in a Navara or Triton. The downside is that throwing a ladder or a canoe on the roof or even washing the car, is a stretch. The load tub is very shallow.

The Courier V6 is heavy and feels tough yet the big Explorer V6 engine makes light work of it for better economy than expected.

The equipment mix is a blend of the stingy and good. You must choose between a single colour with lots of grey plastic add-ons which negate the XLT's extra chrome or two-tone where everything is colour-coded except the side strips which are removed!

ABS and front airbags come only as an option with the V6 auto and it is the vehicle of those tested that is fitted with a clumsy 70s vintage underdash handbrake.

There are no map lights or cruise control even as an option. Yet the entry price, side tie-down rails, chilled centre console box and excellent sound system with separate CD stacker could tilt the equation in the Courier's favour.
