1972 Triumph Spitfire MK4 – Well-Sorted Classic I’m selling my 1972 Triumph Spitfire MK4. I’ve owned the car since February 2023 and have genuinely enjoyed every minute with it. I originally bought it to see if I would enjoy owning, driving, and tinkering with a classic car—and it turns out I absolutely love it… as does the rest of the family! That’s precisely why I’m now taking the next step and pursuing a long-time dream classic. Unfortunately, with limited space, the Spitfire has to make way. I purchased the car as a “rolling restoration” project. While it was drivable when I bought it, I’ve carried out extensive work over the past three years to improve reliability, drivability, and overall condition. This includes refurbishing major mechanical components such as the brakes, carburettors, differential, and gearbox, along with addressing many smaller issues. Today, it’s a straight, rust-free and good-looking car that drives well and is perfect for weekend drives or Cars & Coffee meets. ________________________________________ Work Completed Brakes & Clutch • New rear brake shoes and cylinders • New front brake pads • Refurbished master brake cylinder and replaced brake line Gearbox & Clutch • Refurbished clutch master cylinder and replaced clutch line • Clutch inspected and cleaned (no replacement needed) • Refurbished gear linkage • Gearbox serviced with new synchromesh rings, bearings, and reverse gear • New gearbox mounts Engine • Refurbished cylinder head with new valve guides and new heater and cooling hoses. Carburettors rebuilt (jets, needles, gaskets) • Electronic ignition installed • New HT leads and distributor cap • Fuel filter installed and fuel pump diaphragm replaced • Rear main seal replaced • Timing chain and alternator belt replaced • Rocker shaft replaced and rockers resurfaced • Engine mounts replaced • Oil sump cleaned and painted • New oil filter • Air filter box and filters installed • Coolant overflow reservoir added • Speedometer cable replaced Drivetrain & Suspension • Rear U-joints replaced • New front springs and shocks • Rear shock absorber replaced • Driveshafts cleaned and painted • Differential bearings and main seal replaced • Wheels cleaned, painted, and balanced Electrical • Numerous wiring and contact issues resolved • Battery replaced and charger fitted (charger will be provided with the car) • New radio installed • Dash indicator lights added • New headlights and LED dash bulbs • Solenoid replaced • Starter motor cleaned • Oil pressure sensor replaced • Period-style horn fitted • Wiper motor refurbished Interior & Body • Bonnet dent repaired and resprayed • New mirrors fitted • Gear lever gaiter replaced • Glove box installed • Antenna replaced • Astrali steering wheel and matching gear knob fitted • Boot lock key made • Interior door trims installed • Gearbox cover replaced • Driver side seat cover replaced ________________________________________ Condition I’ve aimed to keep the car as close to original and period-correct as possible, using original parts or similar replica parts wherever feasible. That said, it’s not a concours car: • Paint is presentable but certainly not show quality • Originally dark red ("Damson Maroon" in Triumph speak), now repainted white by a previous owner (including door sills, engine bay, boot and underside) • Chrome bumpers show pitting • Soft top will need replacement if you plan to drive in wet weather Also note this car is on club-registration currently which can unfortunately not be transferred. ________________________________________ Summary This is a fantastic, fun classic spitfire that is ready to enjoy as is or can be fully restored if perfection is the aim. I’ve described the car as transparently and thoroughly as possible, but feel free to get in touch with any questions or to arrange an inspection.
