007 back in Aston

Despite offers from the east, Bond is back in the best of British...

Toyota is reportedly willing to pay big bucks to have him drive its offerings, but suave British superspy James Bond is, at least for now, staying exactly where he belongs -- behind the wheel of an Aston Martin.

Devotees of 007 flicks will be aware that Pierce Brosnan makes way for Daniel Craig in the next thriller, Casino Royale, which is due to be released internationally in November,

Aston Martin is playing its cards close to its chest, revealing only that the multi-talented Bond would be driving a new model called the DBS in the next film. For now, the company has released only this abstract sketch, which provides a general outline of the car.

In true Bond tradition, the Aston is likely to be equipped with a host of gadgets designed to stop unsavoury villains dead (often literally) in their tracks.

"It is great news that Bond will drive an Aston Martin again and we have built him something special to enable him to do his job in style," gloated Aston Martin boss Dr Ulrich Bez.

The association with the marque began in 1964 with the film Goldfinger when the DB5 was fitted with 'optional extras' such as ejector seats, revolving number plates and rockets. The most recent Bond film, Die Another Day, also featured Aston Martin's flagship model, the Vanquish.

However, while Bond has been partial to Astons in a number of films, there have been several dalliances with other marques. Some of the more memorable ones include the Toyota 2000GT Convertible that appeared in You Only Live Twice and the amphibious Lotus Esprit that all but stole the show in The Spy Who Loved Me.

However, perhaps the least-appropriate conveyance was the limp-wristed BMW Z3 that Pierce Brosnan piloted in Goldeneye.
