14 rounds for V8 Supercars

The V8 Supercar Championship will have 14 rounds next year for the first time

September 12, 2006

The series will return to Eastern Creek in Sydney on the Queen's Birthday weekend in June, with that round culminating on the public holiday Monday.

The Eastern Creek round is in place of non-championship races at the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne, with organisers saying the mid-March GP date is too close to the next weekend's earlier Perth round of the V8 championship. The proposed Homebush street race at Sydney's Olympic Park has fallen through, while a Townsville street race remains a possibility for 2008.

As CarPoint reported yesterday, expect the clash of Bathurst and the MotoGP at Phillip Island next year to be averted, with the two-wheel brigade likely to move from the first weekend of October. The V8 development series, formally called the Fujitsu V8 Supercars Series, will hold six of its seven rounds as the major support category to the V8 Supercar Championship Series. Wakefield Park will be the only stand-alone event, from March 30-April 1.
