2014 Australasian Safari announces stock 4WD category

'Safari Challenge' competitors limited to 100km/h in test of driving and navigation – not horsepower
This year's Australasian Safari will blaze a new trail for the event, opening up a category specifically for teams in production four-wheel drives.
The 'Safari Challenge' class is limited to stock four-wheel drives and restricted to speeds no higher than 100km/h. Organisers claim the new class, which doesn't even require that vehicles be fitted with roll cages, will make the event more appealing to teams on low budgets and operating vehicles that can be driven every day.
“The category will have people looking differently at what a production vehicle is capable of. A stock standard ute or an ex-mine site 4WD wagon – these are just some of the vehicles that may qualify for the Safari Challenge,” says Event Director, Justin Hunt.
“As competitors in this category will be limited to 100km/h, being successful will be more about good navigation and clever driving than speed and horsepower.
“It is a good budget conscious way to experience off-road motorsport, but it will still be tough.”
Despite the basic entry requirements for the class, Safari Challenge competitors will complete 80 per cent of the competitive course to reach the finish. By tracking the vehicles by means of GPS, organisers will know of any vehicle travelling at speeds above 100km/h. Any vehicle in the class found to have exceeded that speed will be penalised.
Event organisers will issue further details in due course, ahead of the start. The Australasian Safari will run between the 19th and 27th of September this year. Preliminary enquiries can be made by email (info@australasiansafari.com.au) or phone (08 9445 2645).
