The director of Transformers 4, Michael Bay, has announced via his website that the 2014 Chevrolet Camaro SS concept will be "the final jewel in the Transformers 4 crown".
The news puts an end to speculation that a retro 1967 Chevrolet Camaro SS would play the Autobot character Bumblebee in the fourth instalment of the Transformers movie franchise.
To date, the movie cast call for Transformers 4 includes a 2013 Bugatti Veyron Vitesse, 2013 Pagani Huayra, a 2013 Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4, a 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray and a military truck from Oshkosh Defence that will ‘play’ the Autobot character Hound. A number of heavy vehicles will also be on set, including a 2014 Freightliner Argosy and a custom-built Western Star, which will serve as the revamped Optimus Prime.
Automotive brand placement has served manufacturers involved in the Transformers franchise very well to date. General Motors has said previously that the movie was "helpful" in introducing its Camaro and Chevrolet brand to a "whole new generation of fans" after a fifth-gen Camaro played Bumblebee in the original 2007 film Transformers, and again in the 2009 follow-up Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. The company even offered a yellow 2012 Chevrolet Camaro Transformers Edition in markets including Canada, China, Europe, Japan, the Middle East, South America and the USA.
The vehicular stars of Transformers 4 will play alongside Mark Wahlberg, Stanley Tucci and Kelsey Grammer when the latest film is released in June next year.
