Mitsubishi has confirmed the name of its new global compact sedan, Attrage. It will sold alongside its hatchback sibling, the Mirage, in Australia from early 2014, however it's not yet clear if the Mirage-based sedan will bear the Attrage name in Australia.
Mitsubishi says the Attrage name is a contrived version of the word 'attractive' but Caitlin Beale, Corporate Communications Manager at Mitsubishi Motors Australia said there's a chance the car will be badged differently Down Under.
"It has not yet been decided what the car will be called in Australia," she said.
She conceded that it was "more than likely we'll take to the global [Attrage] name" instead of Mirage G4 or simply Mirage sedan. This would mirror Nissan's sub-light car strategy with the Micra hatch and Almera sedan, both based on the same platform.
Beale said it was too early to talk about pricing or specification of the new model but has previously said the sedan would "sit well within the Mirage pricing strategy" but whether it matches the Mirage's $12,990 remains to be seen.
The Mitsubishi Attrage is set for a July launch in its home market of Thailand, and Beale said it would follow Mirage timing of between "six and eight months" after the domestic launch, so we can expect it here in January or February 2014.
The compact four-door sedan made its debut in show car form at the Bangkok motor show Thailand in March then at the Shanghai motor show in April as the Concept G4 and the production version will be powered by the Mirage's 1.2-litre petrol three-cylinder engine worth 57kW/100Nm.
Transmission options will also echo the Mirage's CVT auto and manual shifters.
Mitsubishi has confirmed that the Attrage will use just 4.6L/100km, the same fuel economy figure as the Mirage, and claims the car will deliver class-leading aerodynamics with a drag coefficient of 0.29Cd thanks to its sleek design.
The car is being touted as one of the most manoeuvrable on offer too, with a turning circle of 9.6 metres and makes use of a lightweight high-tensile steel body to improve safety and handling dynamics.
The new compact sedan will rival vehicles such as the Ford Fiesta sedan, Honda City, Nissan Almera and Proton S16 sedan.
