2015 Audi A3 enhanced

German small car more powerful and fuel efficient, but costs a little more

The top-selling car wearing an Audi badge in Australia last year was the A3, and the importer is hoping to cement the car's strong position by offering more efficient versions of some model year 2015 vehicles.

Range-topping 2.0-litre turbo-petrol Audi S3 models now belt out 210kW of power, up from 206kW, enough mumbo to see the compact German rocket from 0-100km/h in 5.0 seconds flat.

At the other end of the spectrum the entry-level Audi A3 Sportback (hatch) models, powered by a 1.4-litre turbo-petrol (TFSI) engine, get an extra 2kW – taking peak power to 92kW – but consume fuel at a lower rate than before, at just 4.9L/100km.

Vehicles equipped with the up-spec 1.4-litre turbo-petrol with cylinder on demand (COD) technology use even less fuel, just 4.7L/100km. These models also pump out more power too: 110kW – up from 103.

Other models in the A3 range have been tweaked too, including the base-model 1.6-litre turbo-diesel (TDI), which delivers 4kW more power, at 81kW now.

More powerful 2.0-litre turbo-diesel models have the same punchy 110kW/350Nm output, with a drop of 0.1L/100km in fuel consumption for a figure of 4.4 litres per 100km. All A3 1.8 TFSI quattro models also feature a drop in consumption of 0.1L/100km.

However the extra herbs and harmony come with slight price rises for most models. The entry-level Audi A3 Sportback (hatch) 1.4 TFSI is priced at $35,900, representing an increase of $300. Top shelf S3 Sportback models are now priced at $61,100 – up from $59,900. The sedan rises from $62,200 to $63,400. These represent increases of $1200 apiece.

With 5149 new A3 vehicles finding homes here in 2014, the small car accounted for almost a quarter of Audi's annual sales – close to 20,000 sales.
