2015 Nissan Navara ute teased

Nissan's all-new Navara ute is taking shape with the release of an official teaser video and image, confirming a full reveal is set for June 11 ahead of its Australian launch in late 2014 or early 2015.

As is increasingly the norm, Nissan has taken to social media to drum up interest in the next-generation Navara, teasing the light commercial vehicle on Instagram and Youtube, the latter highlighting the ute's origins and motorsport exploits while boasting "80 years of pick-up know-how, spanning 14 million customers".

The preview shows a thinly veiled Nissan ute, revealing details of the 2015 Navara's contemporary front end design, including artfully integrated LED daytime running lights.

Appearing to retain its rugged, slab-sided design, the new Navara will debut all-new sheet metal, new interiors and updated engines. It will also ride on an all-new, bespoke platform, and it can't come soon enough; the current D40 Nissan Navara is more than 10 years old.

Nissan's global product chief, Andy Palmer, told journalists at the 2014 New York motor show in April that the new Navara is "around about the same [size as the current D40] – a one-tonne pick-up that's fairly generic in terms of overall dimensions".

Although it will be a similar size – the current Navara dual cab measures 5296mm – the new ute is expected to make significant weight savings in order to yield big fuel efficiency gains. It's currently the heaviest ute in its class.

Palmer also hinted that we can expect a bold new style for the Navara, which as the teaser images show will adhere to the design ethos of the new Pathfinder and X-TRAIL.

"I think it's about what you can deliver on fuel consumption, what you deliver on styling ... these are the key differentiators for that kind of pick-up market," stated Palmer.

Expected to be offered in similar body styles to the current model's single- king- and dual-cabs, the new model will be built in Thailand at Nissan's new $360 million plant that has the potential to manufacture up to 370,000 Navaras per annum.

Andy Palmer also hinted that the new Navara could spawn an affordable seven-seat SUV to rival the likes of the Holden Colorado 7, Isuzu MU-X and upcoming Ford Everest.
