Volkswagen's six year-old Scirocco three-door hatch has been given a fresh lick of paint and a revamped exterior and interior, new images and info reveal.
The ageing 'coupe' is expected to soldier on for a few years yet, and despite benefitting from updated engines it still makes use of the previous generation Golf's underpinnings.
Celebrating its 40th anniversary, the new 'coupe' will make its debut at the 2014 Geneva motor show in March, with the range-topping Scirocco R pulled by a more powerful 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, up from 199kW to 206kW.
In Australia the same engine has been detuned to 188kW to cope with hotter weather and lower quality fuel.
According to the international press statement, production of the new Scirocco starts in August 2014 and the car goes on sale in Europe that year with other regions, including Australia, to follow.
A spokesman for Volkswagen Australia said the updated Scirocco is under consideration for Australia, but wouldn't comment on whether the range would expand from a single model - Scirocco R - as is currently the case.
The updated range-topping sports model is likely to arrive in Australia in early 2015.
The Scirocco R was first launched in Australia in early 2012, and the new model is recognisable thanks to a couple of subtle aesthetic updates.
Updated headlight designs with LED daytime running lights and combine with new rear apron work and a tweaked roof spoiler. Stylised LED brake lights and new-look alloy wheels borrowed from the stonking new Golf R complete the look.
Together with five new colour choices, the Scirocco features several interior upgrades, including higher quality plastics, a new infotainment system and the option of a Dynaudio Excite stereo system.
Volkswagen also offers the Scirocco with a ParkAssist system.
New engine types will be offered in Europe, including an entry-level 1.4-litre turbo-petrol unit that pumps out 92kW, and two less exciting versions of the Scirocco R's 2.0-litre engine, worth 134 and 164kW respectively. A pair of 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engines will also be available in the EU, generating around 112kW and 137kW apiece.
All models except the Scirocco R feature engine stop/start functionality.
Sales of the VW Scirocco in Australia fell sharply in 2013, with 445 units sold compared to 712 sales in 2012, representing a drop of 37.5 per cent.
