Jaguar has unleashed a fresh rival to the Euros, revealing an all-new (and handsome) XF Sportbrake that will take on not only the German wagon triumvirate, but their SUV siblings.
Unveiled by British tennis superstar Andy Murray overnight, the Sportbrake will appear in European showrooms from the third quarter of 2017 and will arrive in Australia shortly thereafter, Jaguar Land Rover Australia has confirmed.
The XF sedan-based Sportbrake will predominantly rival the Audi A6 Avant, BMW 5-Series Touring and Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate. In SUV-obsessed Australia, it will be a welcome antidote to the SUV craze.
Cosmetically, the wagon features a heavily raked roofline that tapers into an augmented set of tail lights that take inspiration from the F-Type sports car. A neat horizontal chrome strip integrates into the reversing lights.
The headline feature is a full-length panoramic sunroof designed to endow the cabin with a light and airy feel, and support Jaguar's newfound obsession with gesture controls.
Up front, the Sportbrake employs the same styling as the XF sedan, a theme that also permeates engine choices and the interior.
The Sportbrake will be offered with the same powertrain options fitted to the XF sedan, comprising a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder, 2.0-litre turbo diesel and 3.0-litre supercharged petrol V6. All versions come mated standard to an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Self-levelling rear suspension is fitted to "ensure an effortless ride".
Inside, the XF brings liberated proportions, along with a familiar infotainment system. The boot has been stretched to a generous 565 litres or 1700 litres with the rear seats folded.
The car's practical dimensions are supported (in the UK, at least) by a two-tonne braked towing capacity and a tow assist feature that prevents trailers from building up a dangerous wobble.
Australian specification cars will be rear-wheel drive only, in keeping with Jaguar’s current XF sedan offering. Pricing is set to be revealed closer to the car’s release.
