The 2019 Mercedes-Benz E-Class will be headlined by a suite of expanded safety systems when it lands in Australian showrooms later this year.
Boasting technology currently fitted to the S-Class flagship, the updated E-Class will have the ability to adjust its speed automatically ahead of bends, roundabouts and intersections using data from the on-board satellite navigation system. The technology comes courtesy of updated adaptive control function along with semi-autonomous steering.
The technical changes are accompanied by a lightly revised interior featuring steering wheel-mounted cruise control functions that eschew the current model’s column-mounted stalk.
Painted paddle shifters are now available along with new centre console finishers, while the vehicle’s seats feature more adjustment than before.
Also new for 2019 is a dual phone mode within the infotainment system, essentially allowing owners to pair two phones to Bluetooth for calls at any one time.
At the business end there are some important updates – namely in the addition of a new E53 variant in place of the outgoing E43.
Offering 320kW/520Nm courtesy of a mild hybrid system, this model is denoted by styling enhancements over the regular model including a more prominent rear diffuser and rounded quad tailpipes.
Elsewhere, the E 350d has been replaced by a E 400d 4MATIC flagship that employs a 3.0-litre turbo-diesel engine producing 250kW and 700Nm. Offering a 0-100km/h time of 4.9 seconds, the oil-burner can consume as little as 5.5L/100km on the combined cycle, according to the car maker.
The 2019 E-Class will go on sale in Europe from June, with Australia deliveries slated for later in the year. It will be available in both sedan and wagon forms.
