BMW's premium small car brand, MINI, will now offer all Hatch and Convertible models with the Driver Assistance Package on upgraded 2019 models.
The most significant change this brings is the addition of autonomous emergency braking (AEB), high beam assist and speed limit info as standard to 2019 MINI Cooper Hatch and Convertible models.
The Driver Assistance Package was formerly a cost option on some MINI model grades and added up to $2500. As such, prices have risen by between $350 and $800.
AEB is considered an essential safety system, which can operate a car's brakes without driver input if it detects an imminent collision. Furthermore, any cars without the feature will not be able to attain a five-star ANCAP safety rating without the technology.
Until the MINI gets retested by ANCAP, it will retain its four-star safety rating from 2014.
MINI Australia's general manager, Brett Waudby, said the improvement in safety equipment across the range of vehicles is a display of the brand's "…commitment to delivering continually improved substance to the MINI range".
"By adding in key safety and convenience features, we have enhanced the customer experience while representing better value than ever," he said.
The new safety features are standard across the range and MINI has thrown a few more goodies at Hatch Cooper S and JCW models, as well as all Convertible models in the form of the Comfort Access package. This brings keyless proximity unlocking and locking doors and push button start.
Top-spec Convertible plus three- and five-door Hatch Cooper S models also get a fancier infotainment system, with the bigger 8.8-inch touchscreen as part of the Professional Navigation System upgrade.
MINI Countryman SUV Cooper, Cooper S and Cooper SD model grades also benefit from the bigger touchscreen.
There are a number of different MINI engines available, starting with a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol and rising up to 2.0-litre turbo-diesel and turbo-petrol units.
