2019 Renault Clio cabin revealed

Renault Clio set to go upmarket as French car-maker begins teasing all-new replacement

Renault has begun teasing the fifth-generation Renault Clio ahead of its launch at the Geneva motor show in March.

The new images reveal the 2019 Renault Clio will feature a completely redesigned cabin that's dominated by a huge 9.3-inch portrait-mounted infotainment system, while all models looks set to come equipped with a full digital instrument cluster.

Angled slightly towards the driver, Renault has confirmed an even larger 10-inch infotainment system -- the largest offered in any compact car -- will be offered as well as a smaller 7.0-inch system for entry-level models.

Set to come equipped with in-car WIFI hotspot and levels of connectivity, the Clio is set to raise the bar in the non-premium compact class.

The 2019 Clio also comes with a more compact steering wheel that is claimed to provide better vision of the new digital dash. The redesigned tiller is also said to get new thumb rests and backlit controls.

Sitting between passenger and driver is a new centre console that features a wireless smartphone charger.

There's also a shorter stubbier gear lever and a manual shifter in what looks like a Clio RS cabin, although there's no news yet if a three-pedal version of the Renaultsport hot hatch has been green-lit.

Following in the tyre tracks of cars like the MINI hatch, Renault says owners of its next Clio will be able to customise their cabin, choosing from eight design schemes that offer different materials for the dash, centre console, steering wheel arm rests and door cards.

There's even ambient lighting with another eight colour settings to alter the interior's mood and, along with new higher-grade materials, challenge the class above for perceived quality.

The Clio is set to be based on the new Renault-Nissan Alliance CMF-B platform as the second-generation Renault Captur and Nissan JUKE; also set to make their debuts in 2019.

The new platform will not only be lighter and considerably stiffer than the current car's structure but allow the small Renault to adopt new technology like semi-autonomous cruise control and hybrid powertrains.

Updated 1.0-litre and 1.3-litre turbo-petrols are expected to power the majority of small Clios sold, while the white-hot forthcoming Clio RS will share the same 1.8-litre turbocharged four-cylinder that was introduced by the Alpine A110 and shared with the bigger Megane RS.

Since it was launched back in 1990, Renault has managed to shift an astonishing 13 million Clios worldwide but recently the petite model has struggled Down Under with just 949 Clios finding Australian homes in 2018.

Renault will continue to tease the Clio as it builds to its official unveiling at the Geneva motor show, although it could reveal the car weeks before that at a VIP event in February.
