New designs, more technology and safety and a mild-hybrid system are the key changes headlining the upgraded 2020 Audi A4 range, which touches down in Australian showrooms this month.
Renewing the fight to the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class, the 2020 Audi A4 is also priced more competitively, with the six-model range now starting at $55,900 (plus on-road costs) -- a $200 saving.
The fifth-generation Audi A4 measures 24mm longer and 5mm wider than its predecessor, liberating more interior space and incorporating a new design that includes a larger singleframe grille, more muscular guards and a lower-set shoulder line.
Further back, the rear-end adopts a more three-dimensional appearance that accentuates its width with the help of trapezoidal tailpipes embedded within a new lower diffuser.
The entry-level Audi A4 35 TFSI sedan anchors the range at $55,900 (plus on-road costs), now fitted with a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder (up from 1.4-litre) that makes 110kW and 270Nm.
It shuffles drive to the front wheels only via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, and can hit 100km/h in a claimed 8.9 seconds.
The 2020 Audi A4 35 TFSI incorporates a 12-volt mild-hybrid (MHEV) system which is claimed to save up to 0.3L/100km. It helps generate a claimed fuel consumption rating of 6.1L/100km combined.
Running off a separate lithium-ion battery, the MHEV system restarts the engine after coasting at speeds above 55km/h, and also enables a stop-start function at speeds below 22km/h, restarting the engine upon taking off again.
As for equipment, the entry-level A4 35 TFSI gets as standard: adaptive LED headlights, 19-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry and start, sports suspension, electric driver’s seat with four-way lumbar support, three-zone climate control, digital radio, wireless phone charging and leather-appointed upholstery.
Inside resides a new 10.1-inch touch-screen display that does away with the predecessor’s finicky MMI rotary dial to liberate more space for odds and ends.
The latest Audi A4 is backed by a five-star ANCAP safety rating (achieved in 2015). The latest model incorporates autonomous emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian detection, eight airbags, side assist lane, change warning, exit warning system, cross traffic assist rear, parking system plus with reversing camera, tyre pressure monitor and pre-sense rear.
Adaptive cruise control is part of an optional package for all A4 models.
Moving up in the range is the 35 TFSI S line sedan, priced from $59,900 (plus on-road costs). Bundling the same 2.0-litre engine with identical 110kW/270Nm outputs and front-drive layout, the S line adds equipment such as an S line exterior package, a 12.3-inch virtual cockpit display instrument cluster, sport front seats, auto-dimming rear view mirrors and side mirrors, illuminated aluminium door sill trims.
The Audi A4 45 TFSI quattro S line sedan brings Audi’s famous quattro all-wheel drive system, priced from $68,900 (plus on-road costs).
Offering sportier 183kW/370Nm outputs, the 45 TFSI engine dispatches 0-100km/h in a claimed 5.8 seconds along with delivering a claimed fuel consumption figure of 7.1L/100km combined. It features the same mild hybrid MHEV system as the 35 TFSI.
In equipment terms, the Audi A4 45 TFSI quattro S line builds off its siblings with the addition of drive seat memory function and a 10-speaker audio system.
The same model is also available as an Avant wagon, priced at $71,400 (plus on-road costs), a $2500 premium.
Sedan variants offer 460 litres worth of boot space while the wagon ‘Avant’ and ‘allroad’ body styles feature 495 litres, extends to 1495 litres with the rear seats folded.
Sitting atop the refreshed 2020 Audi A4 line-up is the ‘allroad’ crossover wagon, which boasts an additional 46mm of ground clearance compared to the A4 Avant, a 6mm wider front track and 11mm wider rear track.
Mirroring the 45 TFSI quattro S line in terms of equipment, the allroad wears a distinct exterior package comprising aluminium roof rails and bespoke front and rear bumpers for a more adventurous bent.
Elsewhere, the Audi A4 allroad features a distinct off-road mode within its drive select system which “combines the functions of traction control, stabilisation control, ABS and hill descent control for added surety when venturing from sealed roads”.
Pricing for the allroad is set at $69, 900 for the 40 TDI quattro, employing a 140kW 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel, and $72,900 for the 45 TFSI quattro, powered by a 183kW/370Nm 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine.
As is customary in this space, the new A4 range is offered with a swag of optional accessory packages.
The $1900 Assistance package is offered with the 35 TFSI sedan, bringing adaptive cruise control, active lane assist and high beam assist.
The $2900 Assistance package plus is available for the 35 TFSI S line sedan and 45 TFSI quattro sedan, Avant and allroad, bringing adaptive cruise control, active lane assist, high beam assist, head-up display, 360-degree overhead camera and park assist.
There’s also a $2100 S line interior package available on 45 TFSI quattro sedan and avant, which brings Nappa leather, black headlining and ambient colour lighting.
The 2020 Audi A4 range is backed by a three-year/unlimited kilometre warranty. Audi also offers a service plan package set across 12-month/15,000km intervals.
On petrol variants, the service plan package is priced at $1710 for three years or $2720 for five years. On the diesel 40 TDI allroad, the service plan package is priced at $2050 for three years or $3190 for five years.
