The new BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe has been revealed, coinciding with confirmation the roomier, four-door small luxury car will be arriving in Australian showrooms early next year.
Based on the same front-drive architecture already employed by the new 1 Series, the 2 Series Gran Coupe will be shown in full at next month’s LA motor show.
Australia's first 1 Series sedan by a fancier name, the newcomer will do battle with the likes of the new Mercedes-Benz CLA and A-Class sedan, and the Audi A3 sedan.
Seen here for the first time in official images, the 2 Series Gran Coupe’s elongated profile measures 4526 mm in length, 1800mm in width and 1420mm in height – traits the car-maker says liberates additional rear leg room and seating comfort and a 430-litre boot capacity.
BMW Australia has confirmed the 2 Series will be available here in at least M235i xDrive specification, which blends a peppy 225kW four-cylinder turbo-petrol with all-wheel drive underpinnings.
“Similar to its four-door coupe stablemates, the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé exhibits an audacious contemporary design, with bold expressive lines that highlight the athletic coupé silhouette” BMW said in a release.
“This is complemented by a contoured kidney grille, all-new design of the rear lights and a high-gloss black band that accentuates the rear width of the car.”
Sharp handling and agility is also assured, says BMW, thanks to the “careful integration” of the new front-drive architecture with chassis technologies.
Beneath the bonnet, the sporty four-door coupe is expected to come with the same turbocharged three-cylinder and four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines that will make their debut in the 1 Series.
Stretching from 100kW (218i) to at least 180kW (225i) for garden variety petrol models, it has been reported the car-maker will also offer a 110kW 218d, a 140kW 220d and a 165kW 225d to fill out the range.
Stay tuned for more details from next month’s LA motor show, where the 2 Series Gran Coupe will be revealed in full.
