Ferrari has revealed an open-top version of the superlative 812 Superfast.
The new Ferrari 812 GTS is the second convertible unveiling from the Maranello marque in 24 hours, following in the wheel tracks of the F8 Spider.
Marking 50 years since the original 365 GTS4 – the last time Ferrari offering a front-mounted V12 drop-top – the new 812 GTS also helps commemorate the car-maker’s 90th birthday celebrations.
The GTS was shown on the eve of Frankfurt motor show in Europe - Ferrari isn't formally attending - but was leaked even earlier from a VIP event at the weekend.
Under the bonnet of the GTS bristles a 6.5-litre naturally-aspirated V12 engine that makes 588kW of power and 718Nm of torque – the same as the existing 812 Superfast coupe.
That makes the new 812 GTS the most powerful cabriolet money can buy.
Revving to a colossal 8900rpm, the V12 sends drive to the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. Nought to 100km/h in delivered in less than 3.0 seconds, while the convertible’s top speed is claimed to exceed 340km/h.
Distinguishing itself from the 812 Superfast coupe, the Spider features a standalone roof, tonneau cover and luggage compartment. The retractable hardtop takes 14 seconds to open and close, and can be operated at speeds up to 45km/h.
The retractable roof structure imposes a 75kg weight penalty over the 812 Superfast coupe, pushing dry mass to a claimed 1600kg. That said, the GTS manages to strike a weight balance of 47:53 front-to-rear.
Ferrari’s Australian operation will reveal pricing and specification details for the 812 GTS closer to launch. But as a reference, the existing 812 Superfast coupe costs $610,000 (plus on-road costs).
