Lexus has revealed a facelifted version of the RX SUV, which is destined to reach Australian showrooms in the fourth quarter of 2019.
Bearing evolutionary visual changes, new technology and the adoption of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto – a first for the Japanese luxury marque – the RX will arrive in Australia in five-seat and seven-seat layouts.
As before, there will be three petrol drivetrains to choose from as the RX takes the fight to the Audi Q7, Volvo XC90 and Land Rover Discovery.
From a styling perspective, changes are punctuated by slimmer headlights equipped with ‘blade-scan’ technology said to take the game forward for automatic high-beam systems, plus evolutionary sheetmetal updates and reworked front and rear bumpers.
Wheel designs have been updated and include 18-inch and 20-inch options, while updated LED tail-lights now incorporate Lexus’ trademark ‘L’ motif.
The RX’s standard safety suite has been extended to include lane tracing assist and road sign assist, while a new touchscreen sits pride of place atop the dashboard, now incorporating Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
From an ergonomic point of view, the centre screen now sits within reach of the driver, having been moved backward, and features touch capability - helping to mitigate long-held complaints over Lexus' touchpad controller, which also carries over.
Further back, there are now two seating positions for the third-row, allowing occupants to maximise leg room.
The RX range continues with carry-over petrol engines comprising, a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder (RX300), 3.5-litre petrol V6 (RX350) and 3.5-litre petrol V6 hybrid (RX450h).
There have been some slightly underbody revisions – namely, redesigned shock absorbers which purportedly reduce high frequency vibrations on patchwork roads, along with stiffer and thicker stabiliser bars and high strength adhesive to extract more torsional rigidity.
Lexus Australia has confirmed the updated RX range will touch down in Australia later this year. Expect more pricing and specification details closer to the car’s release.
