New Mitsubishi Triton GSR and GLX-R variants announced

Popular ute gains GLX-R and GSR trim grades, as prices increas for other variants

Two new model grades have been announced for the 2020 Mitsubishi Triton range, along with a second price increase since an updated model arrived less than six months ago.

The new Mitsubishi Triton GLX-R is available in showrooms now and sits mid-range in the line-up, priced from $39,990 drive-away in six-speed manual form and $42,490 drive-away in six-speed automatic guise.

Positioned between the GLX+ and GLS, the new GLX-R model comes standard with 18-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, chrome door mirrors, front bumper garnish and door handles.

It will be followed into showrooms next month by the new flagship Mitsubishi Triton GSR variant, which will be available in automatic only and priced from $50,990 drive-away – or up to $5000 more if you option one of three tonneau solutions.

As for the rest of the range, 15 Triton variants have received a minor price increase of $250 for the 2020 model year.

The cheapest variant remains the 4x2 GLX Cab Chassis, opening the ledger at $22,490 plus ORCs and fitted with the only petrol engine in the range. And it's manual-only.

At the other end, the 4x4 GLS Premium Triton was the most expensive model-grade at $52,790 (plus ORCs) in auto-only – a title that now belongs to the upcoming GSR.

The new range-topping GSR brings 18-inch black alloy wheels and a blacked-out grille, headlamp garnishes, door mirrors, door handles, side steps and skid plate.

GSR models will also get leather-trimmed seats, steering wheel and handbrake, heated and electrically adjustable front seats, and Mitsubishi’s Multi around Monitor with steering wheel camera switch.

The top-spec model’s interior can also be optioned with tan/orange seats, an orange centre console and knee pads, while three Tonneau accessory packs are exclusive to the GSR.

Those include a soft tonneau cover pack ($2699 fitted), hard tonneau cover ($4699 fitted) or roll-top tonneau ($4999 fitted). Each pack also includes a black sports bar, tail gate assist, under rail tub liner and floor mat set.

All models (aside from the aforementioned entry-spec) continue to be powered by a 2.4-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine, churning out 133kW of power and 430Nm of torque.

Despite the price increases, the 2020 Mitsubishi Triton still offers more competitive pricing than league leaders Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux.

One of the more popular Triton variants, the dual-cab GLX+, was fitted with a rear diff lock and rear air circulator (read: quasi rear vents) as standard in late 2019, which were previously only part of the top-spec GLS models.

GLX+ models also come with a 7.0-inch colour touchscreen (with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto), Bluetooth, 16-inch wheels, digital radio, two USB ports, front and rear parking sensors and a reversing camera.
