VW teases next-generation compact van ahead of February world debut

The 2020 Volkswagen Caddy will be “a completely new car” when the fifth-generation compact van makes its global premiere next month.

The German manufacturer says no screw has been left untouched when designing the new Caddy, which it says will be “100 per cent new, 100 per cent Caddy” and will bring bigger wheels, more driver assistance systems, internet connectivity and a ‘huge’ panoramic sunroof.

Volkswagen says the new Caddy will be renamed, with the people-mover version simply called Caddy and the commercial/delivery model subbed Caddy Cargo.

And it will again be offered in regular and long-wheelbase body styles, the former of which will be longer than the current model.

It’s likely the new Caddy van will utilise VW’s latest MQB platform, which means it could be offered with more drivetrain variations such as mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid options.

As for how the new Caddy will look, not a whole lot has changed, although the teaser images make the 2020 Caddy look sportier all round, with reshaped headlights that flow into the grille and new tail-lights that sit taller than before.

Under the new grille sits a large mouth-like air intake that looks rather futuristic, while the side profile shows off new body lines and massive wheels wrapped in low-profile rubber.

The 2020 Volkswagen Caddy will be unveiled at the end of February, when full details will also be announced.
