2021 Hyundai Bayon SUV teased again

Small SUV set to slot in below Kona and will be first model to debut Hyundai's 'sensuous sportiness' design

Hyundai has released a fresh teaser of the all-new Hyundai Bayon – the entry-level SUV that will touch down in a matter of months in Europe to go head-to-head with the Ford Puma.

Claimed to be heavily inspired by the 2018 Le Fil Rouge concept and the 2020 Prophecy that followed, the Hyundai Bayon will be the first model bearing the car-maker's 'sensuous sportiness' design language that's said to combine "emotional value with innovative solutions in design".

We're not entirely sure how that translates, but the Bayon appears to sport the same ultra-slim headlights that are stacked above a pair of arrowhead lamps.

At the rear, there's a pair of chevron-shaped tail-lights that are linked by a red LED light bar that highlights a rakish rear design, hinting at its lifestyle aspirations.

Named after the French city of Bayonne in the Pyrenes that's a mecca for outdoor sports fans, the new small Hyundai SUV has been specifically styled for European buyers.

With the existence of the aggressively-priced Venue in Australia, Hyundai has already confirmed to carsales that there are no plans for the Bayon to be sold here.

Set to be based on the core Hyundai i20 range (also not available in Australia), the Bayon will be strictly front-wheel drive and offered with either a naturally-aspirated 1.2-litre four-cylinder petrol engine or a more powerful turbocharged 1.0-litre three-cylinder that gets mild-hybrid tech.

Five- and six-speed manual gearboxes will be standard, with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission set to be offered as an option.

Later on, it’s feasible the Korean car-maker’s performance division could produce a hot Hyundai Bayon N, sharing the same 150kW turbocharged 1.6-litre as the recently-revealed Hyundai i20 N which is due to launch in Australia early this year.

The core Hyundai Bayon, meanwhile, will be revealed ahead of its on-sale date in the third quarter of 2021.
