2021 Hyundai Elantra previewed

Longer, lower and wider Elantra due Down Under later this year, gunning for Corolla sedan

Hyundai says seventh-generation Elantra will 'return to its sports sedan roots' when the 2021 model launches later this year.

The fresh-faced Korean small car will take on sedans such as Toyota Corolla, Mazda3 and Kia Cerato.

Releasing just two teaser images, Hyundai says the 2021 Elantra will deliver a sporty four-door-coupe look with longer, lower and wider than ever proportions and a 'parametric dynamics’ design theme (translated: where three lines meet at one point).

Hyundai says the new car pushes the boundaries in terms of design and describes the new model as a daring challenge, the final product epitomising the Hyundai Elantra’s so-called 'disrupter-spirit'.

According to Hyundai Australia, the new model will arrive in Australia in the second half of 2020, but the importer couldn’t reveal further details on trim levels or powertrains.

Current models costs between $21,740 and $31,740, depending on the model-grade. Powertrains include a 2.0-litre petrol (112kW/192Nm) engine and a more potent 1.6-litre turbo-petrol (150kW/265Nm) engine.

Instead, more details will be revealed on March 17 when it makes its global debut from a venue in West Hollywood, California, which will be live-streamed to the world.

The interior sketch reveals a cocoon-like capsule around the driver’s seat, with the central infotainment screen blending into the instrument cluster and what looks to be a full-width air-conditioning vent underneath.

A single side profile teaser image shows a sleek body with those parametric-style lines meeting in the centre of the front doors.
