2021 Infiniti QX55 SUV coupe previewed

Sportier SUV coupe based on QX50 teased ahead of November 17 unveiling

The 2021 Infiniti QX55 SUV coupe has been teased ahead of its official unveiling on November 17.

Claimed to "fuse the stance and versatility of a premium mid-size crossover with the sleek profile of a sports coupe", the Japanese coupe SUV will compete against the likes of the BMW X4 when it launches early next year.

Based on the current Infiniti QX50 SUV, the new QX55 has more steeply raked rear glass, a pair of slim new tail-lights and a rear tailgate spoiler, plus a redesigned lower bumper that's set to feature a faux rear diffuser.

Up front, a sportier front-end design could help Infiniti differentiate the QX55 from the QX50.

Under the bonnet, expect to find a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder that uses a variable-compression ratio to produce 200kW and 379Nm.

In most markets, the advanced 2.0-litre turbo will be combined with a CVT transmission with the option of all-wheel drive.

Inside, the QX55 should be identical to the QX50 with a cabin dominated by a large centrally landscape-mounted screen.

Despite the mid-size QX55 seeming an excellent proposition for the SUV-obsessed Australian market, , on paper at least, Infiniti's latest model is unlikely to ever venture Down Under following Nissan's decision to axe its premium brand here.
