2021 Mercedes-AMG G-Class 4X4² hits the track

The all-new Mercedes-AMG G-Class 4X4² has been caught testing at the Nurburgring ahead of its launch early next year.

In the week that a blistering new Nurburgring lap record was set by the AMG GT Black Series, the sight of the high-riding G-Class 4X4² comically out of its depth is nothing short of hilarious, with its big roll angles and excessive tyre squeal.

Look closer and in the video shot by CarSpyMedia you might even notice the flagship G-Wagen raising its front wheel, just like an early 911 GT3, but the dynamic similarities between the track-bred Porsche and the rugged Range Rover rival end there.

Instead of setting hot laps, the Nurburgring is used by Benz as part of its rigorous durability testing.

Featuring flared fenders, big side steps and a steel rear bumper, it's thought the camouflage also hides a new roof rack design that integrates a ladder.

Designed specifically for American and Middle Eastern buyers, it's believed that, like the last Mercedes-AMG G 500 4X4², the 2021 version should feature up to 500mm ground clearance that will enable it to wade into well over one metre of water.

Helping it go much further than even the standard G-Wagen, the taller Mercedes SUV is set to again come with portal axles, three locking differentials and plenty of power and torque.

We expect it to bag the same twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 as the Mercedes-AMG G 63 that pumps out 460kW and 850Nm and is combined with a nine-speed automatic transmission.

Inside, the standard G 63 AMG cabin should carry over, but the German car-maker is expected to offer yet more ways to customise and personalise the interior.

There's no word yet on whether Mercedes plans to offer the jacked-up G-Wagen Down Under, but the global success of the previous version should have swayed Daimler bosses to produce the new version in right-hand drive.
