Porsche Taycan range upgraded already

New tech, charging updates and even more performance for Turbo S flagship are the headline changes for German Tesla fighter

Porsche has announced it is already upgrading the all-electric Porsche Taycan super-sedan for the 2021 model year, introducing a raft of improvements and updates that will become available in Europe from the fourth quarter of this year -- and from the Taycan's launch Down Under in December.

The big news is that, as part of the upgrades, somehow the already blisteringly fast Porsche Taycan Turbo S will be even quicker for 2021, with the 0-200km/h time dropping to just 9.6 seconds – 0.2sec quicker than before.

The official quarter-mile (402m) sprint time of the top-shelf 2021 Porsche Taycan Turbo S has also dropped a tenth of a second, to just 10.7 seconds, although the 0-100km/h claim remains at a scorching 2.8sec.

Across the rest of the range, a colour customisable head-up display is also now an option and is capable of displaying sat-nav instructions, power output, as well as the usual speed reading.

If you've ticked the box for adaptive air suspension, for 2021 the pure-electric Porsche gains a new 'smartlift' function that automatically raises the ride height over speed bumps or driveways.

Once the updates arrive, Porsche will allow owners to specify more options via over-the-air upgrades, even after they've driven out of the showroom.

The new extras include Active Lane Keep Assist and Porsche's InnoDrive semi-autonomous cruise control, which costs €19.50 ($A32) a month or €808 ($A1330) for life.

For some markets, Taycan owners will also be able to use a new Plug & Charge feature that locates and automatically pays for charging, without the driver having to register for individual apps.

Finally, the 2021 Taycan gets the option of a new 22kW onboard charger and new Battery Preservation tech that's claimed to reduce power loss while charging by auto-regulating the charging capacity at fast-chargers to around 200kW.

Without it, the Porsche EV can charge up to 270kW.

As well as the new tech, Porsche has also added seven new exterior colours and five new interior options, including a Carbon Sport Design Pack.

The Porsche Taycan is on sale now and will arrive Down Under in December, priced from $191,000 plus on-road costs.
