2021 Toyota HiLux Rogue takes shape

Thailand version of Toyota’s lifestyle ute emerges, revealing some key points about the upcoming Australian HiLux Rogue edition

It has been barely 24 hours since Toyota formally took the wraps off the facelifted HiLux model, but already we’re getting a taste of what the forthcoming Rogue and Rugged X editions might look like.

Due to be formally revealed closer to the HiLux’s scheduled Australian touchdown in August, the Rogue and Rugged X models will sit atop the revised 2021 utility line-up – equipped with added tinsel that includes a sports bar, hard cover and marine carpet in the tray and black alloy wheels in the case of the Rogue.

Fresh images of the HiLux ‘Rocco’ and ‘Invincible’ models specific to Thailand provide some possible visual clues as to what we can expect from the updated Rogue and Rugged X, specifically the former.

In a move that mimics the rear styling of the Ford Ranger Wildtrak, the Thai-specific Rocco adopts a new sailplane layout in the tray with a similar shutter-style hard cover roller system as the Ford.

The Rocco depicted here also features a new black alloy wheel design and flared guards to differentiate it from the current model. The same guards could well feature on the Australian Rugged X, which features more of an off-road bent thanks to added underbody protection, a snorkel and a broader 4x4 focus.

As with the regular HiLux, the flagships will sport a revised trapezoidal grille with new headlights, plus underbody changes including a more powerful 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine with 150kW and 500Nm in automatic guise (manual 420Nm).

Inside, all new HiLux models will be equipped with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while Toyota’s infotainment interface will feature a volume knob and tuning knob in place of buttons on a screen.

As with the current Rogue and Rugged X models, Toyota Australia will import the flagships into Australia before fitting their distinguishing features at a Melbourne assembly facility.

That means the rollout of Rogue and Rugged X models could be pushed back from the rest of the HiLux range’s landing August.
The HiLux Rugged, Rugged X and Rogue originally hit showrooms in 2018, bringing styling and capability enhancements over the regular eighth-generation HiLux but with no mechanical changes.

At present, pricing for the automatic-only Rogue starts at $62,490 and the Rugged X starts at $62,490 ($64,490 for automatic).
